In accordance with the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 640 dated 12 June 1996 “On the approval of the list of inland waterways that belong to the category of navigable waterways”, and aimed at improving navigation on inland waterways of Ukraine (in particular the Pivdennyi Buh River) by introducing modern electronic navigational aids, this year the State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine starts to develop electronic river navigational charts (ERNC) of the Pivdennyi Buh River from Voznesensk to Mykolaiv.

Development and application of such charts will enable:

• to develop modern cartographic product in the world coordinate system WGS-84 based on international and national cartographic standards and comprehensive hydrographic works carried out in 2012;
• to provide Ukrainian inland waterways with extra coverage of high-accuracy electronic data till 2014;
• to provide navigators interested in modern navigation methods with extra information in the form of cartographic product for chartplotters.

It is expected that the series of cartographic publications «Navigation on the Dnipro River» will be issued by the State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine.

Navigational and hydrographic overview «Navigation on the Dnipro River. Kyivske Reservoir, Dnipro River from Loiev to Kamaryn, Prypiat River from Usivske Reach to Chornobyl» was published.

Navigational and hydrographic overview «Navigation on the Dnipro River. Kanivske Reservoir from Kyivska Hydroelectric Power Station to Kanivska Hydroelectric Power Station» was published.

The State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine published a manual «Cartographic Support for Navigation».

In order to provide users with access to databases of Ukrainian Notices to Mariners, following the recommendations of the International Hydrographic Organization concerning inclusion of temporary and preliminary nautical chart updates to ENCs correction files of national folio, the State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine is going to render an extra service for the users of Ukrainian NtMs from January 1, 2013, thereupon files of paper Ukrainian NtMs will become available under the title "Notices to Mariners" (sub-title "Ukrainian NtM Database").

According to the requirements and recommendations of the International Hydrographic Organization, the State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine has developed and implemented electronic navigational chart cells - overview UA1F0005, UA1F0006 (scale 1:2000000) and general UA2BD008, UA2BD009, UA2BD010, UA2BE008, UA2BE009, UA2BE010 (scale 1:500 000). This digital cartographic production contains necessary navigational data set for zone of responsibility of Ukraine and is suitable for use in navigational systems.

The publication «List of current temporary and preliminary Notices to Mariners» No. 910, 2013 was published.

It has been completed the Dnipro River chart portfolio consisting of the following albums: «Navigational River Chart of Kyivske Reservoir, Dnipro River from Loiev to Kamaryn, Prypiat River from Usivske Reach to Chornobyl» No. 3534, Kanivske Reservoir from Kyivska Hydroelectric Power Station to Kanivska Hydroelectric Power Station No. 3533; Kremenchutske Reservoir from Kanivska Hydroelectric Power Station to Kremenchutska Hydroelectric Power Station No. 3532; Dniprodzerzhynske Reservoir and Vorskla River Mouth No. 3531; Dniprovske Reservoir and the Samara River from Novomoskovsk to the Mouth No. 3530; Kakhovske Reservoir from Dniprovska Hydroelectric Power Station to Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Station No. 3529; Nyzhnii Dnipro from Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Station to the Mouth No. 3528.

All albums are compiled in WGS-84, based on data obtained from satellite imagery, hydrographic surveys conducted in recent years using highly precise techniques.

Navigational river charts are updated by «Ukrvodshliakh» State Enterprise.

In order to provide mariners with navigational and hydrographic information and reference data important to keep charts and sailing directions permanently updated, the State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine prepares and publishes Notices to Mariners (NM of Ukraine). Notices to Mariners are published as separate editions on weekly basis (48 editions per year).

Starting 1 January 2013 the cost per copy of Notices to Mariners of Ukraine will amount to 36 UAH including VAT without postage charges.

The quarterly «Journal of State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine» acquaints the readers with achievements of national hydrography.

The technology «Print-on-Demand» had been implemented for constantly keeping national portfolio up-to-date and satisfying demands of customers.

Full coverage with electronic and paper navigational charts for the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov is provided.

«Navigation on the Dnipro River. Nyzhnii Dnipro River from Dniprovskyi Firth to Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Station»

This book is a first edition which contains charts and related texts covering the section of the Nyzhnii Dnipro River. It gives only general overview on navigation conditions within this section of the Dnipro River and that is why cannot be used as official guidance for navigation.

This overview includes the pilot providing physical and geographical, climatic and hydrological characteristics of the Nyzhnii Dnipro River from Mouth to Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Station, describing navigational and hydrographic sailing conditions. It also contains 10 chart sheets at a scale of 1:50 000 in WGS-84, including the insert of Kherson Port at a scale of 1:25 000, scheme of yacht-clubs and fuel stations location, chart symbols and signal beacons regulating navigation on inner waterways, navigation rules on navigable arms of the Nyzhnii Dnipro River, pictures of aids to navigation and river sceneries.

For the user’s convenience this publication begins with the Dniprovskyi Firth to the Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Station. Kilometres are measured in the same direction along a navigable waterway; chart sheets are arranged in the same way. The starting point (kilometre zero) is marked in the chart at the entrance to the Rvach River. Bridges are charted from the Upper Dnipro River.

The detailed information on navigation conditions can be found in official navigational charts of the Dnipro River and publication «Dnipro River Pilot» issued by the State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine. Navigational river charts are updated by «Ukrvodshliakh» State Enterprise.

It will be useful for yachtsmen, navigators of small craft, fishermen, tourists and organizations dealing with resources of the Dnipro River.

This overview consists of the pilot providing physical and geographical, climatic and hydrological characteristics of the Kyivske Reservoir, describing navigational and hydrographic sailing conditions. It contains 13 chart sheets at a scale of 1:100 000 and 1:50 000 in WGS-84 including the insert of the Kyivska Hydroelectric Power Station Out-port at a scale of 1:25 000, scheme of yacht-clubs location, chart symbols and signal beacons regulating navigation on inner waterways, navigation rules on the Kyivske Reservoir, pictures of aids to navigation and river sceneries.

For convenience the pilot is compiled in upstream direction from the Kyivskyi Lock. Kilometres are counted in the same direction along a navigable waterway. Chart sheets are arranged in downstream direction due to chart projection and the direction of river flow relative to chart frames. Bridges are charted from the Upper Dnipro.

Navigational and hydrographic overview may be used by navigators in order to study navigation conditions and set a route. It may be useful as well for yachtsmen, navigators of small craft, fishermen, tourists and organizations dealing with resources of the Dnipro River.

The detailed information on navigation conditions can be found in official navigational charts of the Dnipro River and publication «Dnipro River Pilot» issued by the State Hydrographic Service of Ukraine. Navigational river charts are updated by «Ukrvodshliakh» State Enterprise.

While the river bottom is constantly changing, both permanent and temporary sailing information should be reported in route sheets and information summaries issued daily by the «Ukrvodshliakh» State Enterprise. The hydrometeorological information includes daily-range and route weather forecast, as well as storm warnings.

This navigational and hydrographic overview will get acquainted navigators with navigation conditions and will help them to determine a navigation route.

It will be useful for yachtsmen, navigators of small craft, fishermen, tourists and organizations dealing with resources of the Dnipro River.

«Cartographic Support for Navigation»

The State Hydrographic Service of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine has published a manual «Cartographic Support for Navigation».

This book is based mainly on personal experience of authors in practical production of nautical charts. The theoretical information provided in chapters and sections serves the referential and practical purpose and is necessary for students of specialized educational institutions, cartographers to efficiently solve actual charting problems.

Much attention is paid to such important and difficult sections as technology of development and publication of nautical charts, charting complex creation and its role in chart production, specification of hydrographic information which shall be charted and make the chart reliable, demonstrative, user-friendly, etc.

The authors tried to place chapters and sections in a sequence suitable for self-study. For the same purpose the manual includes a number of illustrated schemes and tables which will be useful to all persons associated with cartographic production or those who just master this difficult and important profession. Manual will be useful for specialists working in the field of maritime industry.

Attention! We offer previously edited nautical charts fallen out of navigational use in order to provide students with national cartographic materials as demonstration aids.

Charts are printed in A0 paper size in Ukrainian and English.
